چکیده

There is a lack of data related to activity uptake and particle track distribution in targeted alpha therapy. These data are required to estimate the absorbed dose on a cellular level as alpha particles have a limited range and traverse only a few cells. Tracking of individual alpha particles is possible using the Timepix semiconductor radiation detector. We investigated the feasibility of imaging alpha particle emissions in tumour sections from mice treated with Thorium-227 (using APOMAB), with and without prior chemotherapy and Timepix detector. Additionally, the sensitivity of the Timepix detector to monitor variations in tumour uptake based on the necrotic tissue volume was also studied. Compartmental analysis model was used, based on the obtained imaging data, to assess the Th-227 uptake. Results show that alpha particle, photon, electron, and muon tracks were detected and resolved by Timepix detector. The current study demonstrated that individual alpha particle emissions, resulting from targeted alpha therapy, can be visualised and quantified using Timepix detector. Furthermore, the variations in the uptake based on the tumour necrotic volume have been observed with four times higher uptake for tumours pretreated with chemotherapy than for those without chemotherapy.

Measurement of the efficiency of the pattern recognition of tracks generated by ionizing radiation in a TIMEPIX detector

A hybrid silicon pixelated TIMEPIX detector (256 × 256 square pixels with a pitch of 55 μm) operated in Time Over Threshold (TOT) mode was exposed to radioactive sources and protons after Rutherford Backscattering on a thin gold foil of protons beams delivered by the Tandem Accelerator of the Montreal University. Simultaneous exposure of TIMEPIX to radioactive sources and to protons beams on to...

Biological tissue imaging with a position and time sensitive pixelated detector.

We demonstrate the capabilities of a highly parallel, active pixel detector for large-area, mass spectrometric imaging of biological tissue sections. A bare Timepix assembly (512 × 512 pixels) is combined with chevron microchannel plates on an ion microscope matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI TOF-MS). The detector assembly registers position- and time-resol...

Development of a simple and rapid method of precisely identifying the position of 10B atoms in tissue: an improvement in standard alpha autoradiography

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) can be utilized to selectively kill cancer cells using a boron compound that accumulates only in cancer cells and not in normal cells. Tumor-bearing animals treated by BNCT are routinely used to evaluate long-term antitumor effects of new boron compounds. Alpha-autoradiography is one of the methods employed in the evaluation of antitumor effects. However, a ...

U . K . Imaging and spectroscopic performance studies of pixellated CdTe Timepix detector

In this work the results on imaging and spectroscopic performances of 14×14×1 mm CdTe detectors with 55×55 μm and 110×110 μm pixel pitch bump-bonded to a Timepix chip are presented. The performance of the 110× 110 μm pixel detector was evaluated at the extreme conditions beam line I15 of the Diamond Light Source. The energy of X-rays was set between 25 and 77 keV. The beam was collimated throug...

Systemic Targeted Alpha Radiotherapy for Cancer

Background: The fundamental principles of internal targeted alpha therapy for cancer were established many decades ago.The high linear energy transfer (LET) of alpha radiation to the targeted cancer cellscauses double strand breaks in DNA. At the same time, the short range radiation spares adjacent normal tissues. This targeted approach complements conventional external beam radiotherapy and ch...
